When it comes to planning a holiday to America, the old favourites always seem to be among the first places we consider – Vegas, Los Angeles, New York, Florida and San Francisco. The truth is, America has so much to offer that it’s hard to just pinpoint one area to visit. If you have the time and money, then a tour of America is one of the most memorable trips that anyone can enjoy. For many of us this isn’t possible though, so it’s a case of picking those states and cities that appeal to us. One such state that needs to be on your list the next time you’re planning a trip to America is Colorado.
Why you need to visit Colorado
1. Witness the wonder of The Rockies
The Rocky Mountains (or The Rockies) are the longest mountain range in North America and the highest peak of The Rockies is Mount Elbert which is located in Colorado State. To witness the sheer wonder and presence of these peaks is something breathtaking and truly memorable. You won’t have to go too far to get a good view of the Rockies during a trip to Colorado, with views of the Eastern Edge particularly impressive from Denver.
2. Hit the slopes
With the second longest mountain range in the world running through the state, you can be sure to find a thriving skiing scene throughout Colorado. The state is sometimes known as ‘Ski Country’ so if you fancy challenging yourself to some of the most breathtaking ski slopes on the planet, then get yourself along to one of the state’s many ski resorts. The most famous and popular of all of Colorado’s ski resorts is the magical area of Aspen, a popular hangout for the rich and famous, but an area that has something for everyone. You can find out more about skiing in Colorado here.
3. Explore the city of Denver
The main city of Colorado is Denver, and this would be a great base for any trip to the state. Denver offers visitors so much variety in things to do and see, from enjoying the wonderful Rockies to connecting yourself with Mother Nature in the picturesque Botanic Gardens area. If you’re a fan of animals and wildlife then Denver Zoo and the Downtown Denver Aquarium will certainly keep you occupied for most of the day. If you enjoy exploring the cultural side of a city then be sure to check out the Denver Center for the Performing Arts home of the famous Ellie Caulkins Opera House, and the Golden Triangle which is a must see for art lovers as it is home to eight museums including the Denver Art Museum.
4. Take a walk back in time
The Dinosaur Ridge in Colorado is one of the world’s most famous dinosaur fossil locations, and if you have a keen interest in our pre-historic ancestors and the history of dinosaurs then this is something you must see. With an outdoor museum and visitor centre, The Dinosaur Ridge will take you fact to face with bones, footsteps, fossils and much more from our little (and very, very large) dinosaur friends.
5. Spend time in the Garden of the Gods
With a name like Garden of the Gods, you really need to leave a lasting impression on visitors, and this national park located near the Colorado Springs area certainly doesn’t disappoint. This rock formation formed millions of years ago and has now grown into a popular visitor and nature centre. With rock climbing and Segway tours among the activities, be sure to give yourself a full day to enjoy everything that Garden of the Gods has to offer. A photograph of the Balanced Rock is simply a must – it’s one of the most photographed attractions in the state.
